Eagle Clothes Sign Taken Down Thursday

The iconic Eagle Clothes sign on the corner of Third Avenue and Sixth Street was torn down Thursday.

U-Haul, which owns the building that the sign sat atop of, removed it to add two floors to the building, according to News 12 Brooklyn. City officials said the sign would have defied city height limits with the expansion.

It would have been impossible to restore the sign after the floor construction because the sign's parts are so old, DNAinfo reported.

Building manager David Pollock said he will pay tribute to the landmark in the U-Haul building.

"My first reaction [to the sign] was, what a piece of art," Pollock said. "The size, the proportion – someone really spent some time putting this together. That’s why I’ll do everything in my power to make sure we maintain the past and incorporate parts of the sign into the building."
