Checking in with Cullen Jones, U.S. Olympian

Jones is preparing to compete for gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games this summer.

This article is sponsored by Citi. Cullen Jones was literally a fish out of water when he was growing up in the Bronx. As a child, he nearly drowned at a water park. But he eventually learned to swim at his local community pool and went from a kid who didn’t know how to swim to a gold-medal-winning U.S. Olympian almost 20 years later. Cullen, 28, won his medal as a member of the freestyle relay team at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.  Adding to his list of accomplishments, Cullen is now one of 13 athletes whom Citi is sponsoring in its Every Step of the WaySM program. This innovative digital program benefits U.S. Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls and athletes of all ages in communities across America. Already a corporate sponsor of Team USA …

Doug Gordon, the founder of the website Brooklyn Spoke, is leading a ride from Gorilla Coffee on Fifth Avenue and Park Place, over the Manhattan Bridge and to the city.

National Bike to Work Day is on Friday, and there is no better way to celebrate being a cyclist than ride in solidarity with your fellow two-wheeled neighbors. Doug Gordon, the founder of the website Brooklyn Spoke, is leading a “social ride” from Park Slope to the Manhattan Bridge. Gordon has invited any biking enthusiasts to meet him at Gorilla Coffee, on Fifth Avenue at the corner of Park Place, at 8 a.m. on Friday. Cyclists will first meet for a cup of java and muffins, and then hit the bike lanes at 8:15 a.m. for a 2.2-mile ride to the Manhattan Bridge. Before the ride, all participants will receive free "I Bike BKLYN" buttons, while supplies last. The route will cut through downtown Brooklyn to the bridge, where Transportation …

MLB All-Star Party to Hit NYC

Javits Center, other New York events, will be part of Citi Field's All-Star closeup.

Major League Baseball has made it official: New York City will host the All-Star Game for the ninth time in its history. The 2013 version of the midsummer classic will take place at Citi Field next July. It's the first time since 1964 that the Mets will hold the event. The All-Star Game was last played here in 2008 at the old Yankee Stadium. The Bronx Bombers then moved across the street to their new stadium a year later. The 2008 game generated $148.4 million in extra revenue, according to Major League Baseball. That year, the league held a FanFest at the Jacob J. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan. The league also sprinkled Statue of Liberty replicas throughout New York - all wearing different team jerseys. Another Javits Center-based…

Brooklyn Half-Marathon Arrives May 19

Race's new route starts at Brooklyn Museum, circles Grand Army Plaza.

It's too late to sign up, but you can still cheer on the runners in this year's Brooklyn Half-Marathon. The organizing New York Road Runners will be inaugurating a new course this year. The race will begin near the Brooklyn Museum and loop around Grand Army Plaza before heading down Flatbush Ave., across Parkside and into Prospect Park. The reason for the change is to accomodate the large number of entrants, as well as to prevent faster runners from lapping slower ones. Officials say the best place for spectators is the finish line in Coney Island on 10th or 12th Streets or Stillwell Avenue. For more information, see Brooklyn Half-Marathon official site. Will you be spectating at this weekend's race?

What Time Should Barclays Stop Serving Alcohol?

Is a 2 a.m. last call too late for the 18,000-seat arena? Is a 10 p.m. cutoff time too early?

The answer to this question may help keep the surrounding neighborhoods more quiet: At what time should the Barclays Center stop serving alcohol?  Last week, Community Board 6 voted to recommend an absolute cut-off time for all alcohol sales at 2 a.m. during all events at the arena. However the recommendation, which will go to the New York State Liquor Authority, came with two conditions that follow the policy already in place for the 40 NBA games: But, BrooklynSpeaks , a coalition of civic organizations surrounding the arena, has a petition that requests all alcoholic beverage sales be cut off at 10 p.m. at the absolute latest in all areas of the arena, reflecting area residents' fear of drunk pedestrians and drivers flooding the streets…

Poll: Rangers vs. Devils in NHL Eastern Finals

Hockey fans, it's time to show your loyalty

It's not exactly a subway series, but the looming face-off between the NY Rangers and the NJ Devils in the NHL Eastern Conference finals could be just as polarizing for local hockey fans. For 20 years, the rivalry has swung from one side's advantage to the other. The 1994 conference finals was a seven-game war of attrition — with games one, two and seven stretching into double overtime — before New York emerged victorious. Eventually though the Devils seemed to get the Rangers' number, and between 1997 to 2001 New Jersey dominated during the regular season in a four-year, 23-game unbeaten streak. Now both organizations have their sites locked on the 2012 Eastern Conference finals. Which side of the Hudson has what it takes this year? Tell …

CB6 Approves 2 A.M. Last Call for Alcohol Sales at Barclays Center

At the general board meeting on Wednesday, CB6 approved the cutoff time with two conditions: During all NBA games last call is at the end of the third quarter and alcohol sales cease an hour before the end of all other events.

When should the Barclays Center's 18,000 attendees stop drinking alcohol during events?  During a Community Board 6 general board meeting on Wednesday night, members voted to recommend an absolute cut-off time for all alcohol sales at 2 a.m. during all events at the arena, which is scheduled to open on September 28. However, CB6’s recommendation, which will go to the New York State Liquor Authority, came with two conditions that follow the policy for events and NBA games: But the decision, which took a couple times to count and recount before the final vote of 21 in favor and nine opposed was established, CB6 considered the fact that the arena will have 57 points of sale. Some members said that alcohol should not be sold past 10 p.m., …

The concern doesn't involve the type of music or the audience members. The event appears to be a concert with multiple performers that could go late into the evening.   more ›

BrooklynSpeaks Circulates Petition on Barclays Liquor License

The group is calling for a 10 p.m. cutoff time for all alcohol sales at the arena during all events.

Last call! Get your last beer! In the latest development regarding Levy Restaurants' liquor license application, which will be the Barclays Center’s food and liquor vendor, BrooklynSpeaks created a petition that requests all alcoholic beverage sales be cut off at 10 p.m. at the absolute latest in all areas of the arena.  "Barclays Center has applied for a license that would allow it to keep serving alcohol up to the 4 a.m. state limit in an 18,000-seat arena," the petition reads on BrooklynSpeaks' website. "Sure, the NBA has a policy that requires liquor sales to end after the third quarter. But basketball only accounts for 40 of the expected 220 events to be held at the arena each year. And Barclays’ application isn’t even limited to …

Brooklyn Nets Apparel Score Major Points in Park Slope

Groups of people shuttled in and out of Modell’s on Tuesday to buy shirts, hats and tracksuits emblazoned with Jay-Z’s new design.

Brooklynites are proudly putting on the colors of the first professional sports team to come to the borough since the Dodgers left in 1957. According to a manager at Modell’s on Flatbush Avenue, between Atlantic Avenue and Pacific Street, there was only 15 percent of merchandise left after Monday, the first day it went on sale. “I opened and closed that day, the sales were dynamic,” Ricardo said, who did not want to give his last name. “There was nothing left that night. Fitted and snapback hats straight sold out. Now there are only youth sizes left.” A man shopping on Tuesday said he could not be happier about the Nets coming to Brooklyn. He said he split season tickets with his friends, for seats “front and center court.” But to go with …

Nets Debut First Brooklyn Commercial

The spot hopes to unite borough residents behind Brooklyn's only current sports team – does it work?

The new Brooklyn Nets have debuted their first commercial, hot on the heels of the unveiling of their brand new logo, designed by co-owner Jay-Z. The spot starts out with a narrator saying, “Brooklyn, you’re a vision,” over a montage of vintage videos of the borough, shouting out the “underdogs” and “the folks on the stoop,” with shots of smiling Brooklynites of all backgrounds.  It’s almost thirty seconds in before the commercial shows the Nets on the court – a mix of former players and stars of today. The narrator says, “We’re grateful for the chance… to call this place home,” over renderings of what the Barclays Center will look like when it opens its doors in September. So what do you think of the new spot? Does it capture the essence …
