Police Blotter: Thief Breaks into Car and Steals iPhone, Tablet and a Radar Detector

Reports from the NYPD's 78th precinct.

The following information was supplied by the 78th Precinct of the NYPD. It does not indicate a conviction. Bad Credit  A slick crook opened two credit cards using a Park Slope woman’s identity and charged over $12,000 since November 2011. The 58-year-old victim told police that on May 8, two banks, First National Bank of Omaha and Chase Bank, called and notified her that someone fraudulently opened two business credit cards by using her name and social security number back in November. The crook maxed out both cards, for a total of $12,650. She was also notified that a third one was opened but was not yet used. Police Blotter: Crook Puts a Car on Cinderblocks and Steals Rims and Tires

Reports from the NYPD’s 78 Precinct.

The following information was supplied by the 78th Precinct of the NYPD. It does not indicate a conviction. A Car Jacking A crook jacked a car from its parking spot on Fourth Street sometime between May 2 and May 4. The victim told police that she parked her gray Toyota Corolla between Sixth and Seventh avenues around 12:30 on May 2. But, when she checked on it two days later at noon, it was gone.  Picture Him Rolling A thief stole a man’s tires and rims while his car was parked on 14th Street on May 2. The 40-year-old victim told police that he parked his Honda sedan between Seventh and Eighth avenues at around 9 a.m. When he went to get his orange Fit the next day at around 8 a.m. it was on cinderblocks and the tires and rims were gone. …

UPDATE: Missing Girl Safely Home

Starmeka Copeland, 12, who disappeared Wednesday, is now back home, police said.

May 12, 12:05 a.m.: The NYPD has reported that Sarmeka Copeland has returned home. === The New York Police Department issued a call Thursday for the public's assistance in locating a young resident of Ingersoll Houses. Starmeka Copeland, 12, was last seen in the vicinity of 345 Lafayette Ave. in Clinton Hill on Wednesday at 8:25 p.m. Police described Copeland as 5-foot 5-inches tall, 110 pounds, with a medium skin complexion. The 12-year-old was last seen wearing a pink hooded Aeropostale sweatshirt, blue jeans and black boots. De Blasio Calls for Bloomberg to Reduce Number of Stop and Frisk Incidents

Public advocate says tactic is causing tension between communities and law enforcement.

Public Advocate Bill de Blasio has called on Mayor Michael Bloomberg to reduce the number of unwarranted "stop and frisk" searches by city police officers. During a speaking engagement at Astoria's Ravenswood Houses, de Blasio said he believed the tactic was creating distrust between some of the city's communities and law enforcement officials. "This starts and ends with the mayor," he said. "This police tactic has gotten out of control under his watch and it's his job to bring it under control. Police Blotter: Babysitter Conned on Craigslist for Almost $4K

Craigslist Con A clever crook conned a Park Slope woman out of nearly $4,000 after meeting on Craigslist on May 6. The victim told police that she posted an ad on Craigslist saying that she was a babysitter looking for work and a woman responded to the ad and forwarded the victim a check for $3,561.99. The con artist told the babysitter to deposit the check into her bank account and wait for it to clear and then to wire the money back to her. The woman complied, but soon her bank account had a negative balance of nearly $4,000, leaving the babysitter responsible for the negative balance in her account. Thief Improvement A quick-…

UPDATE: Car Hits Cyclist on Union Street and Sixth Avenue

A man was struck by a car at the intersection and transported to Kings County Hospital on Sunday Morning, FDNY officials said.

UPDATE, May 9, 1:16 p.m.: According to an NYPD spokesman, the car had the right of way. Witnesses told police that the car was driving south on Sixth Avenue and made a left-hand turn at Union Street while the driver had a green light. The bicyclist was riding on Union Street from Seventh Avenue, but ran a red light at the intersection of Sixth Avenue. Police said that the cyclist flew off his bike after the collision, but only suffered “cuts and scratches” and was not seriously injured.   A bicyclist was hit by a car at the intersection of Union Street and Sixth Avenue on Sunday, an FDNY spokesman said. Applications Now Accepted for Summer Youth NYPD Program

The Youth Police Academy is a six-week program that aims to teach kids about the career of law enforcement.

Applications are being accepted until June 22 for the NYPD Summer Youth Police Academy, for kids 10-16 years of age. The Police Academy is a six-week program that meets five days a week to educate young people about the challenges and responsibility of police work, and to provide positive interaction with police officers. The Academy opens at 8:30 a.m. and dismissal will be 2:00 p.m. Students will attend classroom sessions with lectures, role-plays and topical demonstrations by police officers in the areas of law, behavioral science, drug prevention and gang resistance. Field trips are also part of the curriculum, with transportation provided.  At the end of the summer, there will be a graduation ceremony at One Police Plaza. To apply, …

Subway Snatch A sneaky subway thief snatched a woman’s wallet while she was riding an F train to Seventh Avenue subway station on April 25. The 22-year-old victim told police that she started her trip from Union Square in Manhattan on an R train, but transferred to the F at Jay Street MetroTech. When she pulled into Seventh Avenue station she realized her wallet was missing from her purse. The crook then charged $104 on her debit card to buy a MetroCard, which was in her wallet. Police Blotter: Driver Beats Up Cyclist on Seventh Street in Park Slope

The following information was supplied by the 78th Precinct of the NYPD. It does not indicate a conviction. Road Rage Police arrested a 54-year-old man after he beat up a bicyclist on Seventh Street on April 29. The victim said the driver cut him off in the bike lane near Fifth Avenue around 5 p.m., almost hitting him. The cyclist tapped the car to alert the driver that he was too close. The driver stopped, got out of the car and started punching the cyclist in the face, head and body. The biker fell to the ground and the man continued to pummel him. Two witnesses pulled the driver away and he got in his car and sped off. The biker suffered a bloody nose, bruises and cuts, but refused to go to the hospital after EMTs treated him. Police …

Cops Arrest Crook Right After Cellphone Snatch in Park Slope

Cops arrested an 18-year-old man seconds after he stole a woman’s cellphone on Seventh Avenue on April 21.

Cellphone snatch! Not so fast. On April 21, an 18-year-old man snatched a cellphone out of a woman’s hands and ran while she was standing on the corner of Seventh Avenue and Fourth Street, according to the Commanding Officer of the 78th precinct Captain Michael Ameri. Ameri said that 23-year-old victim was just “minding her own business” before the young crook stole her iPhone at around 6:50 p.m. “She screamed, ‘Oh, my God, help me! Help me!’” Ameri said, explaining that an off-duty detective from the 72nd precinct was standing up the block and saw the robber running towards him.
