Hey Will Y. Lets get together and do some journalism. We could go out and document the percentageRead More of pedestrians who use the crosswalks and how many of them actually use them as designed. You know how to get in touch with me.

Really. Most people do not cross at the crosswalk and Virtually NOBODY presses the button. ThenRead More the few people who do think it is safe to cross the road.

Thank you Will for this story. I agree with Mark it's part of everyday living in NYC; but it'sRead More still exciting when it happens in your own neighborhood.

"a barren meadow denuded of grass" lol

Too clever by half Dudley. All those events you mentioned take place in areas designed for suchRead More activities whether it is the Summerstage or at the site by the Belvedere Castle. And yes they do have the occasional large concert. Those are the type if events that last for a couple of hours and don't involve stands being put up, stands that are mounted on tip of large shgeta of grass suffocating plywood an that entail tent spikes and stands that need refrigeration units and other equipment. We have the Philharmonic in Prospect Park And I have never heard complaints about that. We have concerts pretty much every week at the bandshell and I don't hear complaints about that either. It is an area designed for such events. And even though the event is just one weekend a year as the Gothamist article points out we have the whole rest if the summer of a barren meadow denuded of grass. Oh and if you experienced The Gates then you know that they were mounted along the walkways and viewers stayed on those walkways as they took in the experience. So I'm a busybody. Well you are smug and uninformed. And in fact As I stated earlier Olmsted made it quite clear that the park was intended to be for the quiet contemplation of nature.

Yes, Central Park would never allow an event like this. Except...well, there's Summerstage. AndRead More Shakespeare in the Park. And Met in the Park. And the Philharmonic. And all of the other huge concerts over the decades that have attracted over 100,000 people to the Great Lawn. Oh, and there was The Gates, which supposedly drew over 4 million people over the course of two weeks. Other than all of those things, you're totally right. The Meadowlands parking lot? Dude, it's a food festival. For people who enjoy food. That's the whole point of having it in Brooklyn. It's not a tailgate party. It's not a Bon Jovi concert (who did play Central Park and attracted 60,000 people). If it was in Jersey, nobody would go. As for Olmstead's views on that the park is for...surely he'd be fine with doing something different for one weekend out of the year. Just one weekend. The rest of the year, you can have your quiet reflection. Reflect away. Surely he'd tell busybodies like you and others here to do the 19th Century version of chilling out and letting people have a good time. Grass grows back.
