Live Performances, Cooking Classes and Benefits This Weekend

A look at what's happening in and around Park Slope this weekend.

There's never a shortage of events in and around Park Slope during the weekends. Here are a few ideas to get your weekend planning started.

Friday

- Women can learn moves to protect yourselves in a Women's self defense class at Tai Chi Brooklyn this weekend. One session costs $50 and takes place from 5-7 p.m. Take the second session for an additional $35 Saturday at 3-5 p.m.

- Catch The Thigh-Highs, Bonedaddy ,The Jeanies and Boxtopus live at The Rock Shop starting at 8 p.m.

Saturday

- The latest workshop at BIG!NYC Gowanus covers book binding. Artist Shannon Kerner will teach you the basics at noon

- What better way to combine the experience of New York's diversity and fine cuisine than through the unique stories and expertise that only a grandmother can share? Sweet Savoring Cooking Parties host cultural cooking classes taught by "grandmas". Participants learn to prepare a traditional three course meal in a small setting akin to grandma's kitchen at Ground Floor Kitchen at 6:30 p.m. 

- The OMNI Ensemble kicks off its 31st Season at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 or $10 for students and seniors. They can be purchased at the door or reserved by calling (718) 859-8649.

Sunday

The Animal Hop is an event for kids that is part dance party, part book party, with 100-percent devoted to helping animals. Authors include: Nick Bruel, Michelle Knudsen, Peter Brown, Colleen AF Venable and Stephanie Yue. Tickets cost $10 but the first 50 families in the door get a free copy of 'Going, Going Dragon, the finale of the Eisner nominated kid’s graphic novel series 'Guinea Pig Pet Shop Private Eye'
