School Begins, Primaries Held This Week

What's happening this week in and around Park Slope.

- Today will be the first day of school for students in the New York City public school system, so keep an eye out for kids on the streets and sidewalks this morning and afternoon.

- That also means that the city's new system of high-speed cameras in school zones will be making its debut today.

- Tuesday will be Primary Day in New York City. You can find your polling site online at the Board of Elections website here. For Democrats, the current front-runner is Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, being chased by Bill Thompson, Christine Quinn, Anthony Weiner and John Liu. Among Republicans, Joe Lhota and John Catsimatidis are locked in a struggle for the nomination.

- Take part in Garfield's Grill & Chill Purple Cocktail Event, which aims to raise awareness on domestic violence. The event takes place at 274 Fourth Avenue on Thursday at 6 p.m.

- Dine and Drink at Woodland Restaurant's Foxglove Cellar on Sept. 10 between 5-11 p.m. and 15 percent of the proceeds will be donated to Dancewave.
