B37 Bus Returning to Third Avenue

Although its comeback is unconfirmed by the MTA, B37 bus advocates are celebrating.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority board of directors is ready to bring back the B37 bus, which runs from Bay Ridge to downtown Brooklyn along Third Avenue, according to the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.

The MTA will officially vote on the B37’s restoration on July 24, but Councilman Vincent Gentile announced in a statement Monday night that the B37 has indeed returned.

"This is a major win for Brooklyn – for seniors, students, the disabled and businesses along the corridor – from Bay Ridge to Prospect Heights – for people who need to get to work, doctor’s appointments, schools and houses of worship – this route is essential," he said.

The B37 was canceled three years ago during MTA budget cuts, inspiring petitions and protests by those who used the bus route to get to Third Avenue for work or leisure.

The MTA has not yet confirmed that the B37 is back.

"What changes that may occur will be presented at next week’s MTA Board meeting," MTA spokeswoman Deirdre Parker told the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.

Regardless, all signs point to a victory for those negatively affected by the B37’s demise.

"For three years, families, seniors and businesses have suffered without the crucial bus service they need and deserve," said Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis. "Transit riders, community leaders and elected officials have fought tooth and nail to restore the B37 through rallies, petitions, correspondence and public pressure on the MTA. The restoration of this bus would be a tremendous victory for the people of Bay Ridge and all of Brooklyn. Over the next week, we will continue to make our voices heard and effect positive change in our community."
