Rain Ruining Manhattanhenge 2013 Right Now

Yet another reason to be all mad about the weather.

This article was written by Matthew Hampton.

Manhattanhenge, the phenomenon that is all the rage on Instagram, is totally stymied by clouds this year.

Twice annually, the setting sun lines up perfectly with Manhattan's street grid, resulting in a light show of ultimately pretty boring proportions. It's not like it reveals the location of the Ark of the Covenant or anything.

But you may as well put away the 5D you got for your college graduation and stop taking photos with your iPads, because Tuesday's overcast skies are putting a real damper on the whole thing.

If you still want to try your luck at sun-worshipping through the clouds, Internet demi-god Neil Degrasse Tyson has some advice through the American Museum of Natural History's website.

"For best effect, position yourself as far east in Manhattan as possible. But ensure that when you look west across the avenues you can still see New Jersey. Clear cross streets include 14th, 23rd, 34th. 42nd, 57th, and several streets adjacent to them. The Empire State building and the Chrysler building render 34th street and 42nd streets especially striking vistas," Tyson wrote.

Sunset Tuesday night puts the event at around 8:16 p.m., and you'll have another shot Wednesday night at around 8:15 p.m., and then again in July. By then, we'll probably have traded the rain for sweltering, unbelievable heat anyway.
