Soap Box Derby to Take South Slope by Storm

Drivers will arrive at noon, with children ages seven to 15 racing at 1 p.m. and adults taking their marks at 2 p.m.

Starting at 1 p.m. today, come cheer on racers young and old as they compete in the 2013 Open Source Gallery Soap Box Derby.

As Patch detailed before, Children and children at heart have assembled their vehicles from local materials and will put their contraptions to the test starting at 17th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues.

As part of the summer soap box workshops held at the Gallery, 7- to 15-year-olds learned how to build soap box racers out of recycled materials, creating functional and eco-friendly vehicles. Though the workshop is now over and was only open to children, anyone with a need for speed and a car built out of found material can be part of the race.
