Stats: Marathon Finalists

Two friends of 26 years ran the ING New York City Marathon together on Sunday, defeating the challenging route.

Remember our the on Sunday and trained together for 18 weeks, although in different countries?

Well their official finish times are in.

Terry McGovern, 40, who has been living in Germany since 2002 and has been a serious runner for 14 years, flew in for the marathon last Friday.

He finished in three hours, 50 minutes and 51 seconds. His goal was three hours and 45 minutes, just missing it.

“The last couple miles knocked the stuffing out of me; I had been right on target for my three-hour-and-45-minute goal until around mile 23,” Terry wrote in an email. “But the course and the crowd were wonderful.”

Mike Clark, a 40-year-old Park Slope resident, who said he is not a great runner, but decided to challenge himself and try to enjoy a sport he was not particularly good at, finished in four hours, two minutes and 27 seconds.

“The cliché about a brand new 26.2-mile race after the first 20 miles was true for me. For the first eighth miles, Brooklynites’ raucous enthusiasm–especially from my family and friends–sparked me to run too fast,” Clark explained. “I started to ‘blow up’ and run much slower on First Avenue.

“By mile 24, I felt pure anger and complete joy equally,” he said. “By mile 25, I swore I’d never run another marathon.”

But, that sentiment changed soon after he crossed the finish line.

“When I walked out of Central Park, draped in foil finisher’s blanket I was thinking about the next one,” Clark said.

The duo, although in different countries, will start training again in mid-December for the Bonn Marathon in Germany in April.

“Terry better watch out!” Clark said.
