Upgrades Coming to Fourth Avenue Subway Station

Today the MTA revealed details of its renovation plans for the Fourth Avenue F/G station.

Details have emerged surrounding the renovation of the 78-year-old Fourth Avenue F and G station.

Nearly $3 million of funding has been pledged for capital improvements to the station, which will be made in conjunction with renovations already underway as part of the .

In addition to fixing crumbling brickwork, restoring the station’s art deco details, and other rehabilitation work, the upgrade will include reopening the east side entrance to the subway station.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced that the long-shuttered station entrance should be open by the end of the year, allowing straphangers who live east of Fourth Avenue to enter the station without crossing the fast-moving, accident-prone avenue. Many local residents, including the Park Slope Civic Council, have long pressed to reopen the station entrance, arguing that the intersection was an accident waiting to happen.

As , Borough President Marty Markowitz earmarked $2 million to improve the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Ninth Street, as part of his vision to transform the Fourth Avenue corridor into a grand “Brooklyn Boulevard”. State Assembly Member Joan Millman also contributed $800,000 to project.

“4th Avenue-9th Street was designed as one of the grandest stations in the entire MTA subway system,” said Borough President Marty Markowitz in a statement. “Its restoration as a signature streetscape element will mark the beginning of what I hope will be many more efforts to transform the entire stretch of Fourth Avenue from the Atlantic Ocean to Atlantic Avenue into my grand vision for a magnificent Brooklyn Boulevard.”
