The state education commissioner will set a new teacher evaluation system if city officials and the teacher’s union have not reached an agreement by June 1, NY 1 reported.
Larry Schwartz, a senior advisor to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, announced on Wednesday that the governor plans to introduce a bill that would allow State Education Commissioner John King to initiate the June deadline and have a new teacher evaluation system in operation by September, NY 1 reported.
The new deadline would be written into law through a budget amendment.
Under the law, the state’s Education Departmentwould be able to step in and impose a planduring any year in which the city did not already have one in place.
The city’s Education Department has already lost $250 million in state educational aid after failing to reach an agreement with the United Federation of Teachers on a new evaluation system by Jan. 17.
An additional $250 million could be lost if the city does not have the system in place by September, NY 1 reported.
