UPDATE: Sanitation Department Issues 'Snow Alert'
Up to an inch of the white stuff could fall across the city, with more forecast for the weekend.
Update, Jan. 20, 2:47 p.m.: The city has extended its Snow Alert through Saturday in advance of an approaching storm, with as much as three to five inches of the white stuff possible, according to the National Weather Service.
The Metropolitan Transportation Agency is also suspending scheduled maintenance on many subway lines because of the forecast snowstorm.

With the forecast Thursday night into Friday, the Department of Sanitation issued a rare——"snow alert" for the five boroughs.

The alert will begin at 6 p.m. To prepare for inclement weather, workers will conduct equipment readiness tests, load salt spreaders and install tire chains, according to DSNY.
Snow is also forecast for Saturday, with as much as 1 to 3 inches possible.
