Park Slope Board Hosting Hearing on Fate of Central Parking Garage

Park Slope Community Board 6's landmarks and land use committee is seeking public input on the fate of Central Parking, which may be turned into a 28-unit luxury high rise.

A developer has been eyeing the spot currently occupied by Central Parking in Park Slope.

Park Slope Community Board 6's land use committee will host a hearing at the Prospect Park YMCA, located at 357 9th Street on the 7th floor, at 6 p.m. tomorrow to gather public commentary prior to creating a recommendation for usage of the space.

The developer, Midwood Investment and Development, is looking to build a 28-unit luxury high-rise in the space, located at 798-804 Union Street, which would mean the end of the parking facility and, potentially, other local businesses.

Residents said that the addition of retail space and new homes would impede on an already-crowded community.

News of Central Parking's possible disappearance has already caused a dramatic spike in the price of parking at area garages. Spaces have been going for as high as $80,000 at locations such as Garage Condominium.
