City Beaches Expected to Open On Time
Despite Sandy damage, all of the beaches maintained by the Parks Department are scheduled to open on Memorial Day weekend.
Most of the post-Hurricane Sandy cleanup at the city’s beaches has been completed and all sites operated by the city’s Parks Department are still expected to open for swimming on Memorial Day weekend.
The city maintains 14 miles of beaches that opens annually on Memorial Day and closes after Labor Day.
Several of the city’s swimming spots, including Rockaway Beach, were severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

However, the Parks Department recently announced on its website that the city’s beaches will open for swimming on May 25 thanks to the efforts of volunteers as well as city, state, and federal agencies to clean up the aftermath of Sandy.
But Parks Commissioner Veronica White told the City Council last week that some of the beaches would not appear as they once did due to the storm, NY 1 reported.

Repairs to Rockaway Beach alone cost $147 million, according to NY 1.
Once beach season opens, lifeguards will be on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
