Democrats Bill de Blasio and Scott Stringer were the big winners in New York City Tuesday night, with both candidates greeting crowds of cheering supporters after a campaign hard fought campaign in which both were underdogs.
In Brooklyn, Bill de Blasio celebrated after a Primary Night during which his total hovered preciously close to the magic 40 percent number that would allow him to avoid a runoff. While official results won't be available for days, de Blasio said he was confident he would be the Democratic nominee, skirting narrowly above the requisite margin.
Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, however, was more confident, earning a concession call from Eliot Spitzer after beating the former governor in the race for New York City comptroller.
On the Republican side, former MTA chairman Joe Lhota secured the nomination outright, earning over 50 percent of GOP voters in the city.
