ConEd Prepares Electrical Grid on Eighth Ave for Summer

A crew installed a secondary electric cable under the avenue to help prevent blackouts in the hot summer months.

On a bright spring day, a thick cable was cranked slowly down into a manhole on Eighth Avenue.

According to the workers from Consolidated Edison in the intersection of Berkeley Place, they were installing a secondary electric cable into the manhole to help make the electrical grid a more robust.

The secondary cable is meant as a backup, so if a fire breaks out this summer residents in the area will not lose power.

"Summer is coming and we're preparing the grid to help prevent outages. In case there's a manhole fire, this secondary cable will make sure that the electricity in this area doesn't go out," a ConEd crew worker said while he fed the cable down the manhole last week.
