Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer kicked off his Brooklyn campaign for New York City Comptroller Sunday with endorsements from members of Congress and officials from the State Senate, Assembly and City Council.
Reps. Jerrold Nadler (D-10), Nydia Velázquez (D-7), Yvette Clarke (D-9) and Hakeem Jeffries (D-8), as well as Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and other Brooklyn elected officials gathered on the steps of Borough Hall to stand behind Stringer for the position.
"As an elected official, Scott Stringer exemplifies what it means to be a dedicated public servant," said Clarke. "I wholeheartedly endorse him to be the next New York City comptroller."
Jeffries agreed, pointing to how Stringer championed the reform of stop-and-frisk, modernized the city transportation system and worked as an "ally for economic opportunities for ... working families" as reasons to support the candidate.
"Now more than ever, in the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy, New York City needs a fiscal watchdog like Scott to safeguard how the federal money is dispensed," Jeffries said.
Nadler, who has worked with Stringer for over three decades, said he can be counted on to "lead with integrity and vision."
"From fighting for working families, to his tireless support of critical infrastructure improvements, Scott has a proven record of leading and confronting some of the most difficult issues facing this city," Velázquez said. "Scott is a great Manhattan Borough President and he will be a great city comptroller, which is why I am supporting him."
Markowitz agreed, noting "Throughout Scott's distinguished career, he's clearly proven that he is an excellent leader, compassionate, and truly dedicated to improving the lives of all New Yorkers."
Stringer accepted his supporters' endorsements, saying it is those elected officials who make him proud to work in public service. "What's needed right now in city government is an experienced hand who can partner with the mayor when it's in the best interest of the city, but also someone with the independence and back bone to stand up to special interests, to call out wasteful spending, and to safeguard the city's pension funds," he said.
"That's what I have done my entire career, and that's exactly what I will do as our city's next comptroller."
In Brooklyn, Stringer has also been endorsed by: Senators Daniel Squadron, Eric Adams and Kevin Parker; Assemblymembers William Colton, Joan Millman, Dov Hikind, Nick Perry, Helene Weinstein, Karim Camara, Felix Ortiz, Alan Maisel, Annette Robinson, Jim Brennan, Steven Cymbrowitz, Joe Lentol, Alec Brook-Krasny, Peter Abbate and Walter Mosley; and Council Members Dominic Recchia, Letitia James, Vincent Gentile, Stephen Levin, Diana Reyna, Brad Lander and Jumaane Williams.
