Cabbie Union Blasts Illegal Taxi 'Epidemic'

Wants city to crack down in name of rider safety.

The surge in illegal taxis in New York City has the union for the city's official taxi services honking mad.

In fact, at a Flatbush press conference on Wednesday, New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers President Fernando Mateo called on the city's Taxi and Limousine Commission to ramp up efforts to stop the 10,000 illegal cabs operating in NYC, citing rider safety as their top concern.

The event comes after a 35-year-old woman was raped in Brownsville after hailing a sport-utility vehicle livery cab on Sept. 17, according to police.
