Anthony Weiner Wants You To Bike More

Weiner wants tax breaks for companies that encourage bike commutes.

Anthony Weiner is trying his best to stake out some swath of progressive land in the Democratic primary for mayor, and he's decided to start with two liberal mainstays: bikes and taxes. Tax breaks, specifically.

Weiner held a press event at a Manhattan bike shop Monday, according to Capital New York, to announce his effort to increase bicycle trips in New York City by 25 percent during his (hopeful) mayoral term.

Weiner reportedly wants to offer tax breaks of up to $120 per worker for companies that subsidize bike-commuting employees. Subsidies could include helping those bike fiends pay for maintenance incurred during daily trips to and from the office or restaurant or whathaveyou.

Capital noted that his stance on bikes while he was a member of Congress — was not always so friendly.

He frequently threatened to scuttle Mayor Michael Bloomberg's attempts to introduce bike lanes in outerborough communities, and famously proclaimed he would have ribbon-cuttings during construction to tear them out, if elected mayor.

That of course, came at a time when Weiner was serving portions of Brooklyn and (mostly) Queens that have fought against Bloomberg's pro-bike agenda.
