Ryan Devaney remains in serious but stable condition at Lutheran Medical Center.

According to the New York Daily News, Ryan was living in his parents' quaint Howard Place home in spite of an order of protection after the disturbed son threatened to "cut off" his father's fingers if he didn't give him money in July. According to the Daily News, Ryan was due in court today on grand larceny charges and has previous arrests for robbery, grand larceny, drug possession and violating orders of protection.

Several neighbors have reported that Ryan had a troubled history of mental illness.

"This is a tragedy, we are all shaken by it," said a neighbor at 15 Howard Place, who witnessed Ryan being pulled from the subway station covered in blood and soot. "We watched [Margaret] struggle with him for years." According to the neighbor, Ryan possibly suffered from schizophrenia and ADHD.

"He was on medication and drugs, in and out of the hospital," said Christos Bohtis, 61, who lives on the neighboring block and had painted the family's house on Howard Place in the past. "He was mentally ill."

Pushpa Patel, the owner of Kruppa Grocery on nearby Prospect Park West, seconded the comments. She noted that he frequently stumbled into her bodega in the middle of the night, with the appearance of being under the influence of drugs.

"He was a nice boy, but I think he was troubled," Patel said.
