UPDATE: Roof Collapse Shuts Down Fourth Avenue

The roof of a parking garage at Fourth Avenue and Second Street collapsed earlier this afternoon.

UPDATE: The 78th Precinct confirmed that the incident was due to snow. They also confirmed that there was in fact no gas leak, but rather the gas was shut off at the site due to safety concerns.

Already hopeless traffic conditions grew even worse this afternoon when the roof of a parking garage on Fourth Avenue partially collapsed, shutting down the avenue from Atlantic Avenue to Eighth Street.

No one was injured in the collapse of the one story structure at Fourth Avenue at Second Street.

The New York City Fire Department has yet to determine the cause of the collapse and could not confirm rumors that there was a major gas leak at the site, but National Grid was called to the scene.

The fire department responded to the call just before 1 p.m.

Traffic delays on streets surrounding Fourth Avenue are expected.
