The Lost Members of Squad 1

Twelve members of the FDNY's elite Squad 1 on Union Street were killed on 9/11

The wooden sculpture outside Squad 1 was adorned with flowers and candles Sunday as Park Slope residents paid tribute to the 12 members of the neighborhood's Bravest who were lost on 9/11.

The flag at the firehouse on Union St. flew at half-mast as people came by throughout the day. Some took pictures, some chatted with the current members of the elite FDNY unit and some came to silently reflect on what was taken away ten years ago.

"This is where I'm from," said Michael Sexton, 48, who grew up on 3rd St. and now lives in Fort Greene. "This is an important event. These are important guys."

The statue, entiled Out of the Rubble, lists the following members of Squad 1 who died trying to help others at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001:

  • Capt. James Amato
  • Lt. Michael Esposito
  • Lt. Edward D'Atri
  • Lt. Michael Russo
  • FF Peter Carroll
  • FF David Fontana
  • FF Thomas Butler
  • FF Brian Bilcher
  • FF Matthew Garvey
  • FF Stephen Siller
  • FF Gary Box
  • FF Robert Cordice

In total, the city lost 343 firefighters during the terror attacks.
