Police Blotter: Third Street Building Hit Twice by Check-Stealing Crook

A thief stole two checkbooks from two different mailboxes in the same Third Street building, one on June 4 and the other on June 15, and cashed a few of them for a total of $18,000.

Snatch ‘n Cash

A crook stole a box of checks from a Third Street apartment building and cashed two for over $8,000 on June 4.

The 55-year-old woman told police that she ordered checks from her bank but someone stole them from her mailbox between Fifth and Sixth avenues. Her bank called her and told her someone had cashed two checks for a total of $8,500. The victim told police that she never wrote the fraudulent checks.

A Second Snatch ‘n Cash

A thief stole another man’s checkbook from a mailbox in the same Third Street building and cashed a few of them for almost $10,000 on June 15.

The 35-year-old victim told police that he ordered a new checkbook but someone snatched them from his apartment’s mailbox, the same building where the crime above occurred on June 4, around 11 a.m. The thief then wrote and cashed multiple checks totaling $9,500.
