Police Blotter: Thief Steals Two Bikes Off Truck in front of Bicycle Habitat

Bikes Be Gone

A thief snatched two high-end bikes from a truck belonging to a Fifth Avenue bicycle shop on August 1.

The 26-year-old employee told police that someone snatched two bikes from Bicycle Habitat’s truck parked in front of the store, between 10th and 11th streets, at around 1:30 p.m. The employee told police that the bikes — a Sirrus Limited Bicycle and a Linus Gaston — were still in their boxes and are worth a total of $2,630. She also said that the truck was unlocked and there were no signs of forced entry. 

Bike-Riding Cell Thief

A bike-riding thief snatched a woman’s cell phone from her hands while she was walking along Fourth Avenue and rode off on August 1.

The 46-year-old victim told police that she was walking southbound on Fourth Avenue while she was talking on her iPhone at around 1 a.m. When she approached Baltic Street a man rode up on a bicycle from behind and grabbed her cell out of her hands and rode away. The crook, who the victim could not describe, rode off with her iPhone on Baltic Street towards Fifth Avenue. 

Car Burglary

A crook broke into a car parked on Eighth Street and got away with $1,180 in cash, electronics, credit cards and a passport on August 2.  

The 29-year-old victim told police that he parked his car between Sixth and Seventh avenues at around 1:30 a.m. He also said he was not sure if he locked the doors of his Volkswagen. When he returned to his car the same day at around 8:30 a.m. he found that someone had snatched $600 in cash, an Apple PowerBook, an amplifier, two credit cards and a U.S. Passport for a total of $1,180. There was no broken glass or signs of forced entry. 

Gold Chain Snatch

A quick-handed mugger snatched a man’s gold chain off his neck while he was walking along Fourth Avenue on August 5.

The victim told police that he was walking between Degraw and Sackett streets at around 3:15 p.m. when a black man, approximately 6-foot-3 and weighing 185 pounds, ran up from behind him and snatched his $350 yellow gold chain off his neck. The victim and crook got into a fight, but the thief was able to run away with the gold chain, which had a gold spear with diamonds in it. The crook was wearing a gray hat, gray sneakers and a white shirt. 

Duo Cell Snatch

Two muggers snatched a woman’s cell phone from her hands while she was walking along Seventh Avenue on July 31.

The 30-year-old victim told police that she was talking on her iPhone while she was walking along Seventh Avenue at around 1:16 p.m. But when she approached the corner of Park Place two men came up to her and one crook snatched her iPhone out of her hands. The two males, one of which was wearing a blue shirt, ran southbound on Seventh Avenue. 

Smash and Grab

A thief smashed a car window parked on 10th Street and stole $1,500 in cash sitting in the center console on July 31.

The 23-year-old victim told police that he parked his black Lincoln Town Car between Second and Third avenues at about 8 p.m., leaving cash and his identification in the center console. When he returned to his car the same night at 11 p.m., he found that someone had smashed the driver’s side window and stole $1,500 in cash, his driver’s license, Social Security card, Taxi and Limousine license and his U.S. Green Card.
