Police Blotter: Burglar Steals Laptop and Bottle of Whiskey from 8th Ave. Apartment

The Whiskey Thief

A burglar broke into an Eighth Avenue home and stole a laptop and a bottle of expensive whiskey on Dec. 21.

The 39-year-old victim told police that the thief entered her apartment, between First and Second streets, through the front door without force. The woman’s door was just changed by building management and was not locked. The crook got away with her Apple laptop, a hard drive and a bottle of 12-year single malt whiskey, for a total of $1,210.

Wallet Snatch

A crook snatched a woman’s wallet while shopping at a Fourth Avenue grocery store and made a few fraudulent charges on Dec. 21.

The 26-year-old victim told police that the last time she had her wallet was in Ivy Gardens between President and Carroll streets at around 3 p.m. After calling her credit card company, she found out that the crook made a few fraudulent charges. The crook also got away with $25 in cash.

Friend Steals from Friend

A friend-turned-crook stole a woman’s prepaid debit card with over $1,000 on it from her purse while hanging out in her Eighth Avenue apartment from Dec. 21 to Dec. 24.

The 48-year-old victim told police that she was in her apartment, between Fourth and Fifth streets, with a friend starting at around 3 p.m. on Dec. 21. But, at some point through Dec. 24 at 6 p.m., the victim said, her friend went into her purse and removed her prepaid debit card with $1,340 on it and $25 in cash. The victim did not see her friend steal the money, but she was the only one in the house with her at the time.

She's Not Lovin' It

A crook stole a woman’s purse at McDonald’s on Ninth Street and got away with $70 in cash on Dec. 23.

The 73-year-old victim told police that she was eating at McDonald’s at around 4 p.m., between Fourth and Fifth avenues, but left her purse on the table and left. When she returned to get her bag, it was gone. The thief got away with $70 in cash, her keys, two debit cards, identification and a check for $24. 

Thief Withdraws Thousands from Bank Account

An identity theft withdrew over $4,000 from a Fifth Avenue resident’s bank account between Dec. 20 and Dec. 26.

The 26-year-old victim told police that he still has his ATM card and did not loose it. However, over a span of six days a crook made multiple withdrawals from different ATMs for a total of $4,028.

Special Delivery Snatched 

A thief snatched a man’s computer after FedEx delivered it to his 10th Street apartment on Dec. 5.

The 37-year-old victim told police that FedEx delivered his HP laptop to his apartment, between Seventh and Eighth avenues, at around 4:08 p.m. His neighbor signed for it, but left it in the common area. The crook stole the package, containing the $1,000 laptop, and left.

Known Criminal

A known crook stole over $1,000 in tools from a Second Avenue chain hardware store on Nov. 27.

Lowe’s Home Improvement’s Loss Prevention Department has the crook on video stealing the tools from the store, between 10th and 11th streets, at around 2 p.m. However, the thief was able to snatch $1,314 in drills and get away for the time being.
