Police Blotter: Burglar Steals Almost $400 from Cash Register in Fifth Ave Bar

The owner of Bar Reis said he found the cash register on top of the bar, which was locked inside the back room, and all the cash missing.

Burglar Empties Cash Register on Fifth Street Watering Hole

A burglar broke into a Fifth Avenue bar and stole almost $500 in cash and coins during the early morning hours of June 28.

The 42-year-old victim and owner of Bar Reis, between Fifth and Sixth streets, told police that he locked up his business at 2 a.m. and left for the night. When he returned that morning at 9 a.m., he found the cash register on top of the bar, which was locked inside the back room, and all the cash missing. The burglar broke in through an unlocked cellar gate on Fifth Avenue, found the cash register and stole $400 in small bills and $80 in change. There are surveillance cameras in Bar Reis and in front a Fifth Avenue store one door down. A neighbor told police that he didn’t hear or see anything.

A crook swiped a valuable generator from a vendor storage facility late at night on June 24, costing the business more than $1,000.

Police were told that at 1:42 a.m., someone entered Halal Food Vendor Storage at 291 Butler St. and took a Honda generator, worth $1,200. The Halal Food store is open 24 hours a day, and multiple vendors enter and exit at different times.
