Park Slope Stoop Sale Reportedly Closed by NYPD

Online poster claims cops asked if she was licensed before shutting it down.

A member of the Brooklynian message board posted that two police officers shut down her modest stoop sale on Saturday after telling her she didn't have the required license.

The poster, called QueenJ on the message board, said the police first told her "You can't do this here," before asking if she had a license. She said the items she had for sale at her home Flatbush Ave. near Grand Army Plaza consisted of, "a bike, some clothes, some dishes and a floor lamp."

Stoop sales are legal in New York state and according to the tax form for "casual sales," a seller does not have to report amounts profits of $600 or lower.

A call to the NYPD was not answered.

I don't know whats worse the story or the writing of it. Why not just say something happened somewhere to somebody. Here's a tip its not news unless you have all the facts.
Anthony August 28, 2012 at 03:49 pm
Because following up on a tip and actually making calls requires too much work.

Hugh, maybe you should learn a few things about sentence structure and punctuation before you criticize someone else's writing.

So I guess you see the sarcasm in my post? Is that a piece of coal or a diamond fall out of your crack?
Patti August 28, 2012 at 06:00 pm
Hugh, something happened (a lady was shut down for selling stuff on her curb), we know where: on Flatbush Ave. near Grand Army Plaza, and the somebody - Queen J (some people don't want there full name in print). Your tip is correct but you've got the facts there and it's not an in depth investigative report - just a news item for the neighborhood.

Patti it was a sarcastic opinion on not just this story but many others that are on here. I am sorry to notice if you go to the link there are many facts missing here that would enhance this lazy piece. Sorry I hold the Patch to something more than a high school news paper in fact I have seen my nephews high school papers and they read better than this. Its like someone at patch had to fill a space and just went half assed at it. It just drives me nuts sometimes can you agree?

FROM QUEEN J: The police shut down my stoop sale yesterday at 1pm. I was in front of my building on Flatbush Ave near Grand Army Plaza with a bike, some clothes, some dishes and a floor lamp. They pulled up and sat in the car for a minute, and I thought they were going to the bodega for coffee or something. But instead, they both got out of the car and told my partner and I, "You can't do this here."
I told them I didn't think I was doing anything wrong, and that we have a stoop sale every couple of years and have never had a problem. They asked where I lived and I gestured to my apartment building right behind me. I also said that I wasn't blocking the sidewalk--since there was probably 10 feet open. Then the second cop asked, "Do you have a license?" I replied that I didn't, but I also didn't think I was doing anything wrong. I was calm, but after that I sensed that the cops were getting uncomfortable because people had gathered and were observing. So I said, "I'll pack it up, no problem, officer." And we did. Has this happened to anyone else? Also, does anyone know what the rules are about stoop sales?

If you READ the post on brooklynian, you'd note she actually says she does not want want to speak to reporters. So, the fact that this "story" was stolen off that website, when the poster clearly stated she didn't want to do more than post on that site about it, is a bit journalistically immoral in my opinion.
Patti August 29, 2012 at 04:15 pm
Hugh, I can agree that the article was abbreviated after reading what you have below. Alot of what she says is fluff though and I thought the little news brief was sufficient. Lets not get into why high school papers might be better; there's lots of reasons why and what is making students good writers. I read an article in the NYT that left out the entire other side of the story - nuts - yes that drove me nuts. BTW, it was not a political piece.
Patti August 29, 2012 at 05:56 pm
She may have decided to talk to someone at Patch. Her comment to the Gothamist and DNAinfo came before Patch requested to speak to her. Seeing that Patch is a hyper-local newspaper QueenJ might have found that something she did want to do. Be careful who you are calling immoral before you have the facts.

Patti glad you said it wasn't political I would have wasted my time making a joke about who was about Romney or Obama? LOL!
Jo Garcia August 31, 2012 at 03:07 am
Gee, don't the police have better things to do than stop people from selling some of their own things? Can't they find some hooker or drug dealer to bust?
BRADY September 11, 2012 at 09:26 pm
bust a hooker or drug dealer ,then they'd be accused of racism, guess what! a stoop sale requires a stoop not the front of your multi apt. building and not scrawling chalk advertisments on the street! So someone dialed 911 or 311 ,COMPLAINED AND THE COPS DID THIER JOB! IF THEY DID NOTHING THIS BOARD WOULD FILLED WITH PPL COMPLANING ABOUT THAT!

Being that it is an election year, if you and other registered voters scream loudly enough, someoneRead More will hear you. This sounds like a job for the 7 On Your Side, or NY1 who may be able to reach NYCDOT and Higher Ranking officials at the 78th PCT to respond to your complaint and do something.
