One Dead After Fire on Fifth Ave.

A woman passed away Methodist Hospital after an early morning fire.

A 91-year-old woman passed away this morning after an early morning fire sent her to the hospital in critical condition.

The woman, whose name has not yet been released, was smoking a cigarette in bed when she sent the top floor of her Fifth Avenue and Carroll Street apartment building up in flames shortly after 6:00 a.m.

Sixty firefighters rushed to the scene, where they found the woman trapped in the building and in cardiac arrest. She was rushed to Methodist Hospital, but passed away soon after her arrival.

Three firefighters also sustained minor injuries. The firefighters had the fire under control within an hour.
