Filth-Slinging Oil Company Busted for Park Slope Dumping

Owner allegedly paid New Jersey resident to dump stolen tankers of waste oil across Brooklyn.

The owner of a Brooklyn-based oil tank cleaning company was indicted this week on charges that he and an associate spent two months last year abandoning five tankers full of waste oil on borough streets, including those in Park Slope, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said Friday.

Robert Iengo, the owner of ABC Tank Repair & Lining, based in Canarsie, allegedly paid a kind of sludge "bag man" up to $1,500 each to fill stolen tanker trucks with collected waste oil and then abandon the toxic tanks on streets across Brooklyn.

Patrick McAteer, a New Jersey resident arrested and accused of stealing the tankers and then dumping them — full of waste — in Brooklyn, was also charged.

"To dodge the costs of doing business and gain a competitive advantage, the defendants deliberately circumvented environmental laws, endangering city residents and their homes,” Schneiderman said in a statement. “We’ve discovered their scheme and will do everything in our power to make sure justice is served.”

Iengo, of Queens, and McAteer are both charged with a raft of felonies, including unlawful possession of stolen property and endangering the public health and safety.

Both men could face up to 15 years in prison, according to Schneiderman.
