Driver Passes Out, Strikes Four Pedestrians at the Armory

The pedestrians all sustained minor injuries from the crash.

An elderly man passed out at the wheel, striking four pedestrians in front of the Park Slope Armory Friday afternoon, according to cops at the scene.

At around 4:15 p.m. a man in a silver GMC Yukon came barreling down 15th street, first striking a black Toyota Rav4, then hopping the curb, knocking down a bus stop sign and sliding into the intersection of 15th Street and Eighth Avenue. He then jumped the curb in front of the Armory and stuck four pedestrians standing on the sidewalk, witnesses and police sources said.

The four women – all residents of the CAMBA women’s shelter at the Armory – sustained minor injuries and were transported to two local hospitals via ambulance. The driver sustained no serious injury.

“I thought he was going to hit me,” said Sam Hagan, 60, a Park Slope resident who was driving alongside the SUV when it went out of control.

“This guy drove by me, tore down the bus stop sign, went straight into the intersection and straight into the people on the corner,” he said. “I was just praying for those people.”

Shadi Sarsor, who works at Royal Deli, a bodega on the corner of where the incident occurred, heard the accident and rushed out to try and help the driver and his victims.

“We tried to get the driver out of the car, but he seemed fine,” said Sarsor. “He looked normal, but one of the women was bleeding.”

Royal Deli’s security camera caught part of the incident on tap. , the SUV is seen jumping the sidewalk, knocking down the bus stop sign and barreling forward without slowing or stopping.

Park Slope resident Jonathan Fuchs was in the backseat of Hagan’s car when the accident occurred. At the scene, he said bystanders called 911, helped to direct traffic and tended to the pedestrians until ambulances and police arrived.

“I thought, 'What the hell is this guy doing on the sidewalk? Oh my God, he’s not going to stop,'” Fuchs said.

The driver was not immediately identified by officials. According to police, the driver is not facing any charges.
