Double Suicide in Park Slope Apartment

A male and female were found dead with plastic bags over their heads inside their President Street home on Monday, police said.

A Park Slope couple committed suicide together inside their President Street apartment over the weekend, an NYPD spokesman said.

In what detectives called an “elaborate method” of suicide, the man and woman both tied plastic bags over their heads and placed a tube inside, which was connected to a canister of helium. They then opened the valve on the helium canister and gas filled the plastic bags.

An NYPD spokesman said they couldn’t confirm the couple’s cause of death as gas asphyxiation until the Medical Examiner completed the report.

Police found the couple, a 48-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman, dead inside their home between Eighth Avenue and Prospect Park West on Monday, June 3 at 11:11 a.m.

The couple both left separate notes, but police did not release the contents or reason why they took their lives.

A next door neighbor, Greg Carroll, a 26-year-old magazine photographer, told Patch that the block has been disturbed by the deaths.

“I only knew the man as a neighbor. He was a drummer and I would hear him practice all the time,” Carroll said. “They were nice people.”

Carroll said that the building’s custodian was taking out the trash when he smelled a noisome stench on Monday. He went into the basement and then checked the apartment above.

“He opened their door and saw them lying there,” Carroll said. “He has been pretty shaken up since.”

On Tuesday, the couple’s apartment door was wrapped with plastic and a fan was airing out the hallway.
