Christmas Burner on Bergen

Smoke and flames send two firefighters to hospital with minor injuries

Bergen Street was engulfed with smoke earlier this evening as a fire overwhelmed the third floor of a Boerum Hill Brownstone.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries and were taken to Lutheran Hospital. The building, however, endured worse.

"The entire house was gutted," said Jo Anne Simon, the District Leader for the 52nd District and a Pacific Street resident who happened to be walking by.

The fire broke out at around 8:30 p.m. on the quiet, tree-lined block of Bergen Street between Bond and Nevins streets. It raged on for over an hour, with 25 units and 106 firefighters responding to the second alarm fire.

"When we arrived on the scene, flames were jumping out of the windows," said Officer Dave Kozlow, a police officer at the scene. "The block was covered in smoke."

Firefighters entered the house by ladder through a third-floor window. Additionally, they knocked down the walls between the building and the neighboring Brownstone to check for flames in the walls.

The Assistant Fire Chief on scene said the residents of the building would not be let back into their buildings this evening. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
