Update: Power Restored to All Customers After Flatbush Avenue Fire

All 98 customers that lost power following Sunday's electrical fire at Flatbush Avenue and Bergen Street now have their electricity back.

Update: July 3, 8:42 a.m.: Power has been restored to all customers, according to Con Edison.

Patch thanks all the neighborhood residents who helped with this story.

Update: July 2, 10:42 p.m.: Power has been restored to all but two customers, with one resident reporting his power came back in full by 7:25 p.m.

Of the remaining two without electricity, one customer is located at 473 Bergen St., the address of Bergen Bagels. The address of the second customer is unspecified. Con Ed hopes to have power restored to those two customers by 2 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, a spokesman said.

It is still not clear what caused the initial fire and power outage to 98 customers Sunday evening, or the second loss of power to 20 customers Monday morning. Nor could company officials predict whether Bergen Street residents would lose power again.

Update: July 2, 4:04 p.m.: Con Edison has updated the number of customers without power to 18. Businesses affected include ,  and .

Company officials still don't know the cause of the outage. They estimate power will be restored by 10 p.m. Monday. (See Con Edison's most recent estimate here.)

The power outage affected the subway as well with delays on the 2, 3, 4, and 5 lines between 1:25 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. Everything is running normally now, an MTA spokeswoman said.

Update: July 2, 1:28 p.m.: Eight households on Flatbush Avenue between Bergen and St. Marks lost power again at about 11 a.m., according to area residents and Con Edison's power outage map. The utility company expects to restore power by 11 p.m. Monday.

Update: July 2, 5:47 a.m.: Power was restored to all customers by about 3:30 a.m., Con Edison spokesman Chris Olert said.

Update July 1, 11:47 p.m.: Power still has not been restored and spokesman Chris Olert says they hope to get it back up "in the overnight."

Olert said the union lockout has not affected the Flatbush/Bergen outage because there are "plenty" of workers available to fix the problem.

Update: July 1, 10:19 p.m.: About 90 customers are still without power, but a Con Edison spokesman said the company hopes to restore power tonight.

Officials believe the power loss was from cables overheating in Sunday's 90-plus-degree temperatures, but they won't know for sure until they can analyze the site after power is restored, said Con Edison spokesman ChrisOlert.

As for whether Brooklyn can expect more power failures as the heat wave continues, Olert says possible, but not likely.

"In the whole county, we only have 140 customers without power and you know how many people live in Brooklyn. That could happen on a day without the heat," Olert said. See Con-Edison's outage map for locations.

"it’s a huge system, it’s got that potential (to have a power failure), but the system’s pretty tough. Overall the system’s in good shape," he said.

Update: July 1, 8:18 p.m.: Con Edison estimates power will be restored by 5 a.m. Monday. See Con-Edison's most recent estimate here.

Ninety-eight households and businesses without power after an underground electrical fire broke out on Flatbush Avenue between Bergen and Dean streets, a Con Edison spokesman said.

Officials do not yet know know how long it will take to restore power, the spokesman said.

The fire was reported at 5:13 p.m. and put under control by 6:12 p.m., according to the FDNY.

Con Edison is still investigating the cause of the blaze but the spokesman said it could be heat related.

There are no reports of injuries connected to the fire and service on the 2/3 line was not affected, officials said.

Patch thanks Dean Street resident Peter Krashes for submitting photos from the scene. If you have additional photos, go ahead and upload them to the story.

If you are without power, please let us know when it is restored.

Power was back... and now it's gone again. Came back during the night at very reduced voltage but went out again around 11am. A grate in front of the 78th Precinct house at Sixth and Dean was smoking and ConEd crews were arriving around 11:30.

It's not just on Flatbush. We're on Bergen St (between Flatbush and 5th) and it's out again. ConEd had better get this under control!
