Putin...Poutine

So here's the deal. This Putin guy. The little megalomaniac who is trying to turn back time and restore the Soviet Union. He raises some interesting questions. We preach, in schools and in common usage, that those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.We always cite the example of Hitler ignoring the results of Napoleon's winter vacation in Russia. Do we really believe that? The similarities between Putin's land grab in the Crimea and Hitler's taking the Sudentanland are pretty stunning. And then there's poutine. Canada's contribution to world cuisine. The similarities between Putin and poutine are hard to ignore either. Both mysterious, in a negative way. Both coming from  cold weather countries with a national mentality fixed  in the 1950's.Both incredibly bad for you, yet extremely difficult to get rid of. Both short, although poutine does seem to quiver more than Putin. If we allow Canadians their Poutine then we have to allow Russians their Putin. We don't have to like it. We can use all the economic strength we can muster to express our displeasure. However, the idea of an active American involvement in the conflict, arming anyone, advising anyone, is the worst result of all this. Im not blind to the Hitler comparison. Neither Hitler or Putin are playing power forward on my basketball team. Hitler was nuts. Putin is too. Sinister, yes, both sick bastards. But we are no longer the "Cops of the World" We should sit this one out!
