Former Park Slope Rep. Major Owens Dies

Former U.S. House member dies at 77 years old.

Former Park Slope Rep. Major Owens, a New York City Democrat who served 12 terms in the U.S. House, died Oct. 21 at the age of 77.

He died of renal failure and heart failure, according to The Huffington Post.

Owens was first elected to the U.S. House in 1982 and served Park Slope until 2007.

"New York City has lost a champion who exemplified the very best of what a Congress member can be," City Comptroller John Liu said in a statement.

He was credited with helping to pass the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and taught in the Department of Public Administration at Brooklyn's Medgar Evers College after leaving Congress. Yvette Clark has held his seat in what is now NY's 9th district since 2007.
