Brooklyn Homebrew to Host Sixth Annual ‘Brooklyn Wort ’Beer-Making Competition

Enter your best bottle of homemade suds and get the chance to win $1,000!

So, do you think you make the best beer in Brooklyn?

Bottle up your best homemade brew and enter to win the “Brooklyn Wort” competition.

Brooklyn Homebrew on Eighth Street, Gowanus’ own beer-making supply store, along with Sycamore Flower Shop + Bar in Ditmas Park, are teaming up to host their annual beer-making completion, starting May 28.

Brooklyn Wort will officially start May 28, when local-only beer makers can drop off a bottle of their very own suds at Brooklyn Homebrew and Sycamore through June 7.

The competition accepts any style of beer, so long as you drop off one unmarked bottle of beer with the $5 entry fee and entry label (which you can download below) anytime between the dates above. Since this is a locavore competition, mail-in entries will not be accepted. Only New York resident are allowed to compete.

Winners of the qualifying round will be announced on June 12 and the winners will go on to compete for a $1,000 prize in August.

Danielle Cefaro, the owner of the four-year-old beer-making supply shop Brooklyn Homebrew said she is excited for the competition.

“We are definitely looking forward to it, it’s going to be the biggest one yet,” Cefaro told Patch. “We have expanded with more brewers and will host the competition at a bigger venue.”

Cefaro said that last year’s competition was at Public Assembly in Williamsburg, but for the sixth annual competition she will bring it to a Gowanus venue.   Last year, New York City resident Colby Janisch won with his Black IPA, beating out 75 other entries.

There will be a panel of about 10 judges from local breweries, bar and beer shops to taste all of the entries and pick a winner.

For more details on the rules and regulations, download them here, or go to Brooklyn Wort’s website. For the beer label needed for entry, download it here. Details on who is competing, location and time of the preliminary round of judging will be released in June.

For brewers who want to compete, drop off entries at Brooklyn Homebrew at 163 8th St
Brooklyn, NY 11215 or at Sycamore at 1118 Cortelyou Road Brooklyn, NY 11218.
