What's Open and Closed on MLK Day

The lowdown in Brooklyn this holiday.

Every year we remember Martin Luther King, Jr. around his birthday on the third Monday of January.

For this federal holiday, many institutions close. Here's a look at what's affected today:

- All branches of the Brooklyn Public Library are closed today.

- There is no garbage or recycling collection. If Monday is your regular garbage collection day, put your garbage out after 4:00 PM Monday evening. If Monday is your regular recycling day, wait until next week to put your recycling out.

- All government offices and courts are closed, as well as all public schools.

- Alternate side parking is suspended for today, but meters are on.

- Many local chains such as Rite Aid, Walgreens and others will be open.
