Pop Up Repair is coming to Brooklyn!

Pop Up Repair was launched in June 2013 in Upper Manhattan, we are an itinerant repair service for household items of all kinds. Our project, founded by theatre artists, is a challenge to the cycle of use-and-discard consumer goods.

Pop Up Repair will be at Film Biz Recycling on President Street, from March 12 - March 30. Film Biz Recycling is a leader in creative reuse and recycling.

Pop Up Repair fixes household items – the kind of things that are very hard to get repaired these days, and that wind up in landfill. As theatre artists, we have experience working with a wide range of items and tackle everything that we can: chairs, lamps, phones, toys, appliances, knick knacks, jewelry, and more.

Our questions are simple: in our culture, when something breaks there are limited alternatives to tossing and buying new. What happens when we provide people with an alternative? Can we help people find new value in their old things? Are we ready to change our relationship with “stuff”?

The feedback from our community and our customers tells us that, as with the food movement, people are ready to re-think their relationship with consumer goods. As we discussed with Craig Melvin of MSNBC this fall, we believe that there is growing “stuff movement;” people are frustrated with waste and beginning examine more carefully our values and habits in terms of the cycle of consumer goods.

We are also investigating the narrative behind the objects we repair. Why do people choose to toss some things and hold on to others? Do we give an otherwise anonymous item a life, a history, and ultimately, does that give it greater value? In theatre, we take every day things- words, events, objects - and give them heightened meaning by placing them in the context of a larger narrative. Pop-Up Repair aims to give people's real world objects a longer story.
