GREEN-WOOD COMMEMORATES THE BATTLE OF BROOKLYN

The Green-Wood Historic Fund will commemorate the Battle of Brooklyn with a day of family-friendly events.  Fought on August 27, 1776 across Brooklyn, including land that is now part of Green-Wood Cemetery, it was the first battle of the American Revolution and to be waged after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In terms of the total number of British and American troops poised and ready to fight, this was the largest battle of the entire revolution.

10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – Trolley tour of Green-Wood and Revolutionary War-related sites led by author and historian Barnet Schecter and Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman.

12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. – Living history programming with drills, weapons firing, games and historic personalities, featuring re-enactors from Continental Line regiments. 18

1:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. – Battle of Brooklyn Parade from Green-Wood’s Main Gate to Battle Hill led by The Regimental Band of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Attendees are invited to pick up one of the 82 flags that are replicas of the actual flags used during the war and carry it to Battle Hill. 

2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. – Battle of Brooklyn Commemoration Ceremony atop Battle Hill – the highest point in Brooklyn – with views of the Statue of Liberty, New York Harbor, and the Manhattan skyline.

All events are free, except for the trolley tour, which is $30; $25 for Green-Wood Historic  Fund and Brooklyn Historical Society members. To make online reservations or to find out more information, call 718-210-3080 or visit  www.green-wood.com/toursevents.  Reservations for the trolley tour are recommended as it usually sells out quickly. Walk-ups will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis.
