CATEGORY KILLERS: A One Night Pop Up of Over 100 Works of Art By Suzy Kopf

Trestle Projects presents CATEGORY KILLERS, a solo pop up show by Brooklyn painter and printmaker, Suzy Kopf. This one night survey will take place on November 16th, 2013 and feature over a hundred works on paper and canvas made in last six years.

“Category killers” is an economic market term for chain stores such as Walmart, Kmart or Target that sell all manner of goods, thus eliminating the need for independent retailers. The title is a reference to the artist’s most recent series of paintings that explore how these big box structures physically alter the American landscape seen through the aerial lens of GoogleMaps. Additionally, the majority of works in this show are pieces that remain from larger series or editions of prints that now might be seen as anomalies or the end of categories of work.

The exhibit demonstrates the changing interests and influences Kopf has encountered while living and working in New York City and the salon style hanging emphasizes not just multitude of creative effort but also honed brevity of style. Kopf has said about this work, “my paintings tread towards the places of alignment between the natural optics of the human eye and the world as we experience it on our everyday screens. Similar to corrupted picture files, my work evokes a surreal memento mori for the past life of the United States that feels inherently digitized.”

Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Kopf has lived in New York City since 2007. She graduated magna cum laude from the New School University with a degree in Fine Arts from Parsons and a degree in Art History from Eugene Lang College. She has been awarded residencies at Elsewhere in Greensboro, North Carolina and the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont. In 2012 she was named RAW Brooklyn’s Visual Artist of the Year. Her work is in private collections in the United States and abroad. She is currently pursuing her MFA in Studio Art from Maryland Institute College of Art. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
