Earthquake Shakes Brooklyn. Did You Feel it?

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake reportedly felt from Virginia to here

An earthquake hit Brooklyn early Tuesday afternoon.

"I felt the building swaying and I was tossed from one wall to the other," said one Park Slope landlord on President Street, who asked not be identified.

According to reports, a 5.8 magnitude quake hit Virginia and could be felt in New York and down through North Carolina.

The US Geological Survey's website shows where the earthquake orginated.

I tried calling dog walker on her cell phone to see if my home is okay - across from prospect park - can't get a line - phones are out.

Cell phone service has been spotty at best, but the lines seem to be clearing up a bit at the moment.

It was a 'rolling' quake... (lived in CA many years). Weird, because it's not expected here. it's normal in LA & SF, but have never felt this here. Our buildings not built to earthquake code, that entered my mind as I sat inside our brownstone...!

Just spoke to Iris Weinshall. She said this is God's way of saying he hates the Prospect Park West bike lane.

The only place you are perfectly safe is the bike lane. I love the bike lane. I am sick of people complaining about it!

My apartment/furniture on 15th Street swayed and the the chair I sat in shook with a deep, internal, vibrating rumble. Very scary for that short time.

Following up on the fellow expat Californian... think there's any need to have my building's structure/foundation checked out?

I was in my car with my 11 year old daughter waiting at a red light when my car started to boop up and down I thought there was something wrong with my car, it was wild.

Can we try to be a little less dramatic? Technically, what we felt was an aftershock from an earthquake that hit in VA. This article makes it sound like Brooklyn was the epicenter. It wasn't.

I yelled at the kids to stop shaking the table. It was really an earthquake.
Can't blame them for everything.

I have wine glasses and water goblets on a shelf and they were clanging together ringing like little bells. Also paintings on my wall were visibly swaying.

think Iris might be a bit off on her God/bike lane hatred connection - believe it is not God's usual use of time or timelessness - hating on bike lanes. but maybe there is a fault line under the bike lane which is why this whole issue has become soooo crazy. i am sure if all bikers where their helmets they can weather this too

Deborah, I am just wondering why if you are sick of people complaining aobut the bike lane you and your cohorts bring up the issue (and complain) in comments on an unrelated subject.
Julianna August 24, 2011 at 09:50 pm
Kevin, you couldn't just let that one go, could you? If you're sick of people who are sick of people complaining about the bike lane, then there's really no need to stoke the fire, is there? You may hate it that so many people make comments about it, but you're often found commenting on it, too.
We all need to let this go. I think the first commenter was kidding about Iris and God, anyway.

@Julia... Actually, technically, what we felt wasn't an aftershock. An aftershock is another earthquake, two of which there were.. A 2.8 and a 2.2... neither of which were probably felt this far north of the VA epicenter. What we felt could be classified more like a type of seismic wave as a result of the earthquake. Still more than enough to set people on edge especially when they aren't use to it.

Being that it is an election year, if you and other registered voters scream loudly enough, someoneRead More will hear you. This sounds like a job for the 7 On Your Side, or NY1 who may be able to reach NYCDOT and Higher Ranking officials at the 78th PCT to respond to your complaint and do something.
