Woodland Gets Serious Praise from Serious Eats

The food blog tested out the restaurant's appetizer menu and left satisfied.

The blog Serious Eats stopped by Woodland, the new farm-to-table restaurant on Flatbush Avenue, for their “Apps Only” column, in which Ben Fishner snacks his way through New York City’s appetizer menus.

Woodland opened in May, after the owners’ original concept, Prime 6, was shut down by neighbors who .

Fishner reports that the highlight of the meal was the bread basket, with walnut raisin bread and sweet cream butter flecked with black sea-salt, but that he also loved the Pulled Pig Head Croquettes (fried spice pork balls with honey mustard, $6) as well as the Smoked Quail Eggs ($5), which were runny, but not too messy.

Other highlights, according to the review, were the Terrine with Huckleberry ($9), a duck scrapple served with grilled bread and huckleberry jam. For value, The Trapper's Snack gives diners homemade beef jerky with sharp Cabot Clothbound cheddar and sliced cured ham for only $6, says Fishner.

Fishner and his companion also tried the Legume Salad ($10), a combination of favas, shell peas, sugar snaps, haricots verts and romano beans topped with thin slices of raw aged Leonardsville soft cow cheese, a peppery vinaigrette and croutons.

According to Fishner, “the salad was quite good, letting the vegetables shine with their natural sweetness.”

Overall, Woodland seems to have garnered the Apps Only seal of approval. Have you stopped by yet? What are your favorite dishes?

We have had dinner and brunch there, and both were excellent! Leaf salad (I can't remember name) was very good, and I agree with the review of the bread basket. Mushroom and grain entree was incredible, as was the butler steak. Also enjoyed the cocktails! I never thought I would order something called hash for brunch, but it was amazing, as was the "egg in the middle", their version of eggs benedict. Woody Mary and Rhubarb Bellini also to die for!

We had a fish entree that was excellent, and the cocktails were inventive and delicious.

The menu is very eclectic as are the drinks, but the music both times we have gone was a bit to loud for conversation. Would go back for cocktails but doubtful for food.
