Panang Curry at Nahm Thai Kitchen

This new Fifth Avenue Thai spot doesn't disappoint.

Park Slope certainly has its fair share of Thai restaurants, and even more are on the way. So when I heard that one half of Long Tan, the former Thai spot on Fifth Avenue near Union Street, would be replaced by yet another Thai restaurant, I was more than a little dubious.

But Nahm Thai Kitchen is certainly a welcome addition to the neighbor’s oversaturated Thai scene. The décor may be pretty garish, but the food itself doesn’t disappoint.

I took advantage of the great lunch special ($7.25 for a vegetarian entrée and appetizer, $1 more for meat) and ordered the panang curry with the vegetables and tofu soup to start.

The soup was fine, but the curry delicious. Broccoli was a little too crisp, but tofu was just the right amount of fried, with a nice and crispy golden-yellow exterior and that perfect custard-y inside that often converts even tofu haters to the ways of soy. The sauce itself was rich, creamy and flavorful, if not just a little less spicy than I usually prefer. Portion were smallish, but it was the lunch special after all.

Nahm Thai Kitchen certainly wasn’t the most transcendent Thai I’ve ever had — truth be told, I’ll probably remain a devotee of the panang curry at Wantana Siam. But if you’re ever wandering Fifth Avenue with a hankering for some curry, I would definitely give this place a try.
