Bringing a Little Bit of Vienna to Fifth Ave.

Der Kommissar will soon bring an Austrian take on food and drink to South Slope.

When Austrian bar Der Kommissar opens next month on Fifth Avenue and 15th Street, they will not only bring this strip of South Slope another great watering hole – they will fill a void of much needed late night munchies.

Der Kommissar – named for the song by the 80s Austrian rock star Falco – will be equal parts bar and sausage joint. The spot was inspired in part by the outdoor sausage stands of Vienna.

“Vienna has all of these great outdoor sausage spots, but they are also social gathering spots. We’re kind of a glorified take on fast food, but with better food. And beer,” said Gary Baldwin, co-owner of the space.

Baldwin and his Austrian wife, Monika Wuhrer, are the founders of the Open Source Gallery, which made its home just down the street from Der Kommissar until a five-alarm fire destroyed the gallery (and Baldwin’s apartment) in November. Baldwin and Wuhrer will open the space along with Alex Darsey, a bartender at Southpaw.

The spot will offer up a few different varieties of sausage, pretzels, potato salad and Austrian classics like Liptauer cheese and leberkäse, a meatloaf of sorts. Food will be available not only at the bar, but through a take-out window that opens up onto the street, for a truly “indoor/outdoor” vibe.

On the beverage side, German and local beers will dominate the menu, along with Austrian schnapps, a distilled fruit liquor. The bar itself is narrow, with a dark wood bar and a murals painted on the walls by an Austrian artist using a motorcycle tire.

“People can come in and have lunch and a soda, or a late night beer,” said Darsey.

Der Kommissar is slated to open sometime in April. In the spirit of local camaraderie, the owners of Southpaw (who run the legendary East Village Radio show “Chances With Wolves”) will DJ the opening night.

“There really isn’t much in the way of late night dining other than pizza here,” said Baldwin. “We thought we could give that to the neighborhood.”
