Beat the Heat With These Icy Treats

Weather the weather with a bite (or sip) of something cool.

This week the temperatures will begin creeping into the 90s after a long, cold winter and spring of snow, rain, and all-around frigidness.

So instead of spending your days lounging in front of the air conditioning, enjoy the warm weather – and then cool off with one of these delectable chilly treats.

Don’t waste your time with tired classics – instead hit up the new Sky Ice on Fifth Avenue and St. Marks Place, where ice cream gets Thai treatment. The resulting flavors – like Thai-tea, black sesame seaweed and young coconut – will refresh mind, body and taste buds.

This icy cold beverage from DUB Pies on Prospect Park West and 16th Street leaves lemonade in the dust as a summertime staple. Ginger gets mixed with seltzer for a drink that’s extra gingery and refreshing. And though this drink is not for the faint of heart (it really is extremely gingery), if you just ask, the nice folks at DUB Pies will tone it down a notch. It’s the perfect compliment to a walk in the park.

Fro-Yo gets whoopie pie treatment at Culture, the new frozen (and fresh) yogurt spot on Fifth Avenue between Third and Fourth streets. Here, housemade yogurt in either original, chocolate or vanilla gets sandwiched between either chocolate wafers or ginger molasses cookies. If the fro-you sandwich isn’t your bag, try it topped with owner Jenny Ammirati’s signature toppings or paired with fresh fruit in a fro-yo shake.

This one’s for the grownups: at Fifth Avenue’s The Chocolate Room’s excellent, housemade vanilla ice cream gets plopped atop a glass full of Brooklyn Brewery’s Black Chocolate Stout. Of course, for those looking for a great float, sans booze, The Chocolate Room also makes a worthy Root Beer Float and Snow Mint Chocolate Float.

Burgers are great, but the real attraction at Flipsters, on Seventh Avenue and Ninth Street, is the shakes. In wacky flavors like Chunky Monkey, Caramel Latte and Nuts & Berries, a shake at Flipsters is a guaranteed way to beat the heat.
