One More Reason to Celebrate Father’s Day: Healthcare for Our Children

This Father's Day is a good reminder of how important the healthcare reform law is for fathers and their children.

This Father’s Day the most important thing to me is to celebrate it with my children. As a father of two, I know the struggles that many families face in this tough economy and share in the hopes and desires for a better future for all our kids.

Almost all fathers share two big worries: Will our children be able to lead healthy and productive lives, and will we be there to witness and support their transformation into outstanding adults?

We worry whether they will be able to grow up in safe neighborhoods with good schools, live in a clean environment and prosper in a turbulent economy. We always want what is best for them, and we work hard to ensure that their future is much brighter than our own.

The future holds many uncertainties, but today there is one thing we can be certain about—our children will have quality healthcare thanks to the healthcare reform law, the Affordable Care Act.

The law enacts many benefits for children and their fathers (and mothers), and these benefits are all at stake if the Supreme Court decides to overturn the ACA this month.

Much has been said about what is now known as “Obamacare”—and much of it is simply not true. The conservative talking points that get many riled up—“government takeover of healthcare” or “death panels”—simply serve as a distraction from the truth of what the law has already accomplished.

What if I told you that young adults can stay on their family’s healthcare plans until the age of 26? This is true—fathers don’t have to worry that after college graduation their son or daughter will be without healthcare as they search for a job in this tough economy.

Already, over 2.5 million young adults nationwide have been allowed to stay on their parents’ coverage. In New York alone, over 150,000 young adults gained coverage because of healthcare reform.

Now that is good social policy!

We also don’t have to worry about our children being turned away from the hospital and denied insurance because of “pre-existing conditions,” such as having diabetes or having undergone treatment for a particular illness.

Starting in 2014, no one will have to fear being denied coverage or dropped from their health plans at any moment. Healthcare reform is definitely on our side, not on the sides of insurance companies.

And to ensure that fathers will be around for a long time—to be able to witness college graduation, walk our daughters down the aisle, or watch our grandkids’ first steps—the ACA allows us to get preventative care, without a co-pay, to tackle any health problems before they arise.

Screenings for high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, and other preventable illnesses are all available for free during annual wellness check-ups. Mothers can also receive preventative services such as mammograms and cervical cancer screenings.

These benefits are far cries from the “death panels” that opponents try to associate with Obamacare. I’m still not sure how “death panels” are linked with more children gaining health insurance, seniors receiving discounts on their prescription drugs and men and women receiving preventative care for free—I think we should start calling it “health panels” instead.

Our Brooklyn neighborhoods, families and children are all impacted by healthcare reform. The ACA is making a real difference today to ensure a healthier future for all.

If the Affordable Care Act is repealed by the Supreme Court, our children will lose many valuable benefits. The repercussions are enormous and many lives are on the line.

I hope that all fathers, on this year’s Father’s Day and beyond, will join me in standing up for healthcare reform and all of its benefits. It is one way to ensure that all our children have a chance to lead healthy and successful lives.

If the Supreme COurt overturns health care reform they will be the Death Panel. a panel of nine dressed all in black deciding with a stroke of a pen to cause the premature death of millions by denying them healthcare.

"premature death of millions"
What are you smoking? The dependency of liberals is astounding. They've got you right where they want you, depending on the govt to take care of you. Cradle to grave. Can you imagine your parents and grandparents as dependent on the gov't like people are today. Can you imagine them staying on their parents insurance until the age of 26! How about creating job. Liberals have lost 5 millions jobs since Obama's presidency. More people are on welfare/food stamps then in the hostory of this country. They have spent more than all president combined. Look at Greece. It's coming here.

Parksloper, I don't know what YOU are smoking (to quote you back to you). I am a professional and my company does not offer health insurance. The cheapest insurance I was able to find was almost $600.00 and I have no medical issues (though, god forbid, I get any). I'm not dependent on the government but health insurance rates are out-of-control. Do your research.
Patti June 18, 2012 at 02:30 pm
Right on Danielle. Same with my husband and I; the cost would have been sky high which we would not be able to cover. It's easy to blame everything on the "liberals" or the "right wingers" but in the end since we don't restrict ourselves (aka: the insurance companies were allowed to raise and raise and raise the rates as much as they wanted to) so to that end there has to be better oversight.

600.00? That is not a lot of money. Who do you want to pay for it? Where do you think the 1.7 TRILLION dollars are going to come from to pay for Obamacare? Are you ready to wait months to see a doctor? Are you ready to have the elderly die off or as Obama said give them a pill and hope for the best? Do you think anyone will become a doctor if this debacle passes? Why do you think hundreds of corporations, businesses asked for and got a waiver from Obamacare? Those who also voted for it? Its also unconstitutional to force people to purchase health insurance. Last but not least, Obamacare has already lost 800,000 jobs with 72% of small businesses NOT hiring due to Obamcare. Also, tens of millions of Americans stand to lose their current coverage. You and Patti need to do some research and stop believing all the bull thrown at you.
Patti June 18, 2012 at 07:32 pm
First of all I am sure she meant $600 a month which is a lot for me - perhaps not you. Your facts need some checking from a reliable source; you are a little off base.
Parksloper June 19, 2012 at 01:27 am
600.00 for a monthly family plan is not a lot for insurance. Nobody is ever turned away regardless if they have insurance or not. Nobody.
Please enlighten me with the facts that are wrong instead of generalizing.

@Parksloper: People -were- turned away all the time for insurance before "Obamacare". Justified under the concept of a "pre-existing condition". Needless to say, if you were over the age of 30, chances are you had one that would render you ineligible for care.
Unless you've ever tried to buy insurance as an individual on the private market (i.e. no COBRA, no employer, no union, nothing - just calling insurance companies directly), you have no idea how bad it can be. $600/mo (over $7k/year) doesn't even provide useful coverage for many individuals, much less families. God forbid you have a family (or worse, personal) history of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, asthma, or other chronic/critical condition. You'd be uninsurable.

Why is is that I can guarantee "Parksloper" is being helped by government on a daily basis? This is the type of person who is a hater and a hypocrite. Keep blaming liberals you jerk.
Patti June 19, 2012 at 04:40 pm
Quoting you: "You and Patti need to do some research and stop believing all the bull thrown at you."
My response: ditto. Stay away from FOX and even CNN. Go to a factual non-biased report.

Being that it is an election year, if you and other registered voters scream loudly enough, someoneRead More will hear you. This sounds like a job for the 7 On Your Side, or NY1 who may be able to reach NYCDOT and Higher Ranking officials at the 78th PCT to respond to your complaint and do something.
