Swingin' at the Central Library

The second floor of the library was on fire this past Thursday with the sounds of hot jazz.

You wouldn't necessarily think of the library as an obvious place to boogie.

However, at the second installation of Brooklyn Public Library's Plaza Swing Series  last week, it was clear that the Central Library is as good a place to get down as it is to read up.

Lucky for Brooklyn dance fiends, folks are invited to come back and cut a rug this week and the next as the series continues.

"My friend was like, let's go hear some swing at the library," said participant Kimberly Kern. "So we biked down here and the band was awesome, and I am totally going to come back next week."

This Thursday, dancers can hit the floor to the tunes of the Harlem Blues & Jazz Band doing some Kansas City Stomp style ditties, followed by Swingtime Big Band on June 23rd.

The series is free to the public, and all ages and skill level are invited to join. The party starts at 6:30 p.m. and takes place at the Central Library Plaza (and will be moved to the second floor meeting room, should there be another torrential downpour.)

Williamsburg-based dance instructor Eve Polich, who specializes in 1920's and 30's "American vernacular" jazz dance, will be back to school the shy dancers.

"Its fun just to dance," said Nick Pankin, a participant from Ditmas Park. "And at the library, which is a free space for everybody."

"Our friend Tamar is singing in the band tonight. And Eve is our dance gal," said friend Tory Giardina.

"It's a fun place to just come play," she said.
