Photo of the Day: Humongous Snail Attacks Park Slope

This palm-sized mollusk was slurping along Garfield Place.

After a recent wet day, just as the rain stopped and the sun poked out from the clouds, this huge gastropoda slowly slurped between Eighth Avenue and Prospect Park West.

Although we have seen , this land snail was massive and as big as a hand without fingers.

If you didn't know this already, snails have many of their organs inside their shells, including their stomach, kidney, liver, lung and heart. Also, most land gastropods are hermaphrodites.

Today we want you guys to send in pictures of snails, or anything that is slow moving. So, if you can't find one, just use the theme "slow" to inspire some shots.

Either upload photos to this article, or send them to Will.Yakowicz@Patch.com.

I've been rescuing snails -- although I've never seen one as big as this guy! -- for years now in the Slope. It's not often, but when I do see one inching across the sidewalk, completely vulnerable to oblivious humans (or those who might be tempted by a slow and easy target), I pry it up, gently, from the pavement and deposit it in the nearest garden. My good deed for the day! I hope this one made it safe to his/her destination, too.

Being that it is an election year, if you and other registered voters scream loudly enough, someoneRead More will hear you. This sounds like a job for the 7 On Your Side, or NY1 who may be able to reach NYCDOT and Higher Ranking officials at the 78th PCT to respond to your complaint and do something.
