Dating Advice, With a Side of Comedy

Every month, the comedy show Cheap Date serves up comedy and romance.

This isn't your usual romantic comedy.

Whether you’re on the hunt for a fun cheap date, or advice on how to score a date in the first place, head to this Tuesday, where the rules of romance are served up with a side of comedy.

On the second Tuesday of every month, comedians Tyler Fischer and Sharron Paul host , a comedy extravaganza that’s part couples therapy and part good old fashioned stand-up comedy. And of course, at just $5, it’s cheap, too.

“Part of the joke is that we’re both single,” said Fischer. “So we’re giving people all this dating advice but we’re not actually successful ourselves.”

During the show, Fischer and Paul give relationship advice and cheap dating tips, in addition to hosting a rotating cast of some of New York’s best comedians as guests on the show.

Once, Fischer recalls, he brought a pair of friends up from the audience to participate in a skit.

“We were going to tell the couple how long they were going to last, but I knew my friend was going to break up with his girlfriend,” said Fischer. “I didn’t know what to do. So I said ‘two hours.’”

Since Cheap Date kicked off in August, the show has played host to comedy greats such as Hannibal Buress, who Rolling Stone named “The 10 Funniest People, Videos and Things of the Coming Year,” and Reggie Watts.

On Tuesday, the show’s special Valentine’s Day edition will feature Kurt Braunohler (Comedy Central Presents, Human Giant) and Andrea Rosen (Michael & Michael Have Issues).

Fischer and Paul met when they were both fans of a comedy show called Whiplash at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade in Chelsea.

“We decided to start our own show, which is a good way to get yourself noticed or on other people’s shows,” said Fischer.

When Fischer isn’t working on his Cheap Date act with Paul, he works as an actor and spokesperson for a Connecticut credit union. When not on stage, Paul is a contributor to CollegeHumor.com.

“I did standup for the first time in college, a friend talked me into it,” said Fischer. “I just had to do it once and I was hooked.”
